The Place Beyond the Pines (dir. Derek Cianfrance, 2012)

It’s a film that works when you think about individual moments as opposed to the whole thing. I say this because, as a whole, the narrative is incredibly abrupt and scattered. There’s not enough connecting the three stories to make the narrative fluid. The character development was, in my opinion, occasionally to the point of being horrible. There’d be these quick changes in character that weren’t reflected upon enough or given enough background. It’d just be like “Oh hey, now this is a facet of them.” I mostly attribute this to Gosling’s segment. I felt that to be the weakest segment, despite having the most potential. It all should have worked, but it missed the mark more than it hit it. Without Mendes and Gosling, that would’ve just been a beautifully filmed mess.

Cooper’s segment was my favorite. I say this because it’s when ambition wasn’t too high and Cianfrance actually met expectations. The story was simple, real and honest. There wasn’t too much taken on. Plus, I believe Cooper gave the standout performance. He had this emotional realism to his performance. His character also, to me, had the best and most well-balanced development. I actually knew, felt and understood his character’s dilemma. We’ve only just begun to see Cooper transform himself so fully, and I have a lot of faith in the man’s ability to become one of his generation’s finest actors.

The third act is more in the vein of the first. This is when ambition really comes into play. This is when Cianfrance tries to relay the themes into a story that feels completely disjointed. The only thing keeping it together is the characters. It works in doses, but it feels scattered and the two main protagonists don’t have enough development for the effect to be as fully-realized as it wants to be. The only scene that worked 100% was the woods scene, and that’s because Cooper was around to bring the emotional depth.

Despite the film’s many shortcomings, the visuals and framework are remarkably astute, and the use of music is absolutely gorgeous. Seriously, Cianfrance is an adept visual storyteller. However, it takes more than visuals to tell a story. It tries to be ambitious and simply cannot take on the workload. It lacks a consistent script as well as cohesion. Cianfrance wants to speak about family, fatherhood, fate and a bunch of other stuff that’s largely only grazed on the surface.

The reason I don’t dislike the film as much as it may sound is because of the technically ability, the performances and the middle segment. It’s a film that’s remarkable in parts but not as whole.

Grade: B-, possibly C+
